Kayak

Monday 22 Mar 21 Kayaking Morro Bay

22 Mar 21

I got to at 7 and took the dogs on their morning potty break. I made coffee and drank a couple of cups while I completed yesterday's blog entry. The wind was calm but it was forecasted to be very windy again in the afternoon. I debated for a bit but ultimately decided to unload the kayak. Once it was off I carried out to the boat ramp that was about 500 yards away. I tied a rope to the bow and then pulled it alone side the pier and was able to step down into the kayak without any problem. I rowed out into the bay but decided I should get my backup phone to take photos. I pulled into a different pier, tied up and then went and got the phone.

Back in the kayak I rowed towards the shopping area. It was nice to be able to get up closed to be sailboats that were moored in the bay. There was a current that was pushing me along in the direction of the shops. I came across a pier built especially for sea lions and seals. Boy are they loud. I rowed to the other side of the bay and got out of the kayak. After pulling it up on shore I hiked a short distance on the sand dunes. It was a lot further to the ocean beach than I had imagined so I just went back to the kayak and shoved off back into the bay. I rowed almost to the end where the channel goes out to sea. At one point I came across a couple of sea otters. It might have been a mom with her young. It was a blast. I was out for a couple of hours then started rowing back. Going against the current was definitely more strenuous and caused my back to hurt a bit but I made it back without any problem. I carried the kayak back to aRTy and was able to load it back on without to much trouble. After it was loaded I drove to the shopping area and parked close to the Little Hut Fish and Chips. I had today's special which was two pieces of fish, tons of french fries, clam chowder and some garlic toast.

After lunch I checked out the Maritime Museum. There was a homemade submarine there that a father and son had made. They had planned to use it to harvest abalone from deep waters. They actually test the sub and it functioned moderately well but they never used it for its intended purpose.

After the museum I drove to the base  of Morro Rock and parked in the ocean side of the lot. There were a couple of Kite Surfers there and as I was walking to the surf one came in and talked to me. His name was Danny and he said that it wasn't that difficult to learn. That it was similar to snowboarding which I have never tried.  For $2000 a person could get a nice set up. It sure seemed like it was a lot of fun. After talking to Danny I walked the beach and picked up several shells and sand dollars.

After the beach I went back to aRTy and nuked a can of Beef-a-roni and ate it with some crackers and cheese. After dinner I drove a short distance up Highway I to Highway 46. I took 46 until I found a pull out overlooking a lake with the ocean in the background. I watched the 3rd episode of Band of Brothers them crashed for the night.
